The Story of Abraham and Sarah
Home / The Story of Abraham and Sarah

Long ago, in the ancient city of Ur, there lived a man named Abram and his wife, Sarai. They were both kind and generous, and they loved each other deeply. Even though they were surrounded by people who worshipped idols—statues made of wood and stone—Abram and Sarai believed in something greater. They believed in one true God, Hashem, who created the heavens and the earth. Abram had always felt that there was only one Hashem, even though no one else in his city understood or believed this.
From a young age, Abram looked up at the sky and felt wonder and gratitude for the sun, the stars, and all of creation. He knew deep down that these beautiful things could not have been made by statues or idols, and he often wondered why people worshipped things made by human hands. Abram would speak to his family and neighbours, trying to help them understand that there was only one true Hashem, who was invisible but always present.
One day, Hashem spoke to Abram, calling him to take a special journey. Hashem said, “Abram, leave your homeland, your family, and your father’s house, and go to a land that I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you. I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing to others.”
Abram was astonished but filled with excitement and faith. He knew that Hashem’s plan was wise and that this journey was something he needed to do. He shared the news with Sarai, and together they began to prepare. Abram and Sarai packed up their belongings, gathered their servants and animals, and prepared to leave behind everything they had known.
They set out on the long journey with faith in their hearts, not knowing exactly where Hashem would lead them. Day by day, they walked through deserts, over hills, and past rivers, trusting that Hashem was guiding them. Abram and Sarai were kind and welcoming to everyone they met along the way. They would often share stories of Hashem’s kindness, hoping that others would also come to believe.
After many weeks of travelling, they reached a land called Canaan. Hashem spoke to Abram again, saying, “This is the land that I will give to your descendants.” Abram looked around at the beautiful land and felt a deep sense of peace. He built an altar there to thank Hashem, marking the place as holy. Abram and Sarai set up their tents, beginning a new life in this promised land.
But their journey wasn’t always easy. The land went through a time of famine, where there was little food or water. Abram and Sarai traveled down to Egypt to find food, always trusting that Hashem would protect them. They faced many challenges, but with Hashem’s guidance, they made it through each one.
Years passed, and Abram and Sarai continued to live in Canaan, helping others and sharing Hashem’s teachings. But there was one thing they still longed for deeply—a child of their own. Even though Abram and Sarai were growing older, they prayed that one day, Hashem might bless them with a child.
One night, Hashem spoke to Abram again, saying, “Look up at the stars in the sky, Abram. Can you count them?” Abram looked up at the night sky, filled with thousands of twinkling stars. Hashem continued, “So shall your descendants be.” Hashem promised Abram that he would become the father of a great nation, as countless as the stars in the sky.
To show this promise, Hashem changed their names. Abram’s name became Abraham, meaning “father of many nations,” and Sarai’s name was changed to Sarah, meaning “princess,” because she would be the mother of a great people.
One hot day, Abraham was sitting outside his tent, resting. He noticed three travellers approaching. Even though he didn’t know them, he hurried over to welcome them, offering water to wash their feet and inviting them to rest under the shade of his tree. He asked Sarah to help prepare food for their guests, and together they served bread, milk, and meat, making sure the visitors were comfortable.
As they ate, one of the guests turned to Abraham and said, “Next year, at this time, Sarah will have a son.” Sarah, who was listening from inside the tent, couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She was so surprised that she laughed to herself. After all, she and Abraham were very old, and she thought it was too late for them to have a child.
But the visitor, who was truly an angel sent by Hashem, heard her laughter and said, “Why did Sarah laugh? Is anything too hard for Hashem?” Sarah realised that she had doubted Hashem’s power and felt embarrassed, but deep in her heart, hope began to grow.
True to Hashem’s promise, a year later, Sarah gave birth to a son. They named him Isaac, which means “laughter,” because Sarah had laughed with disbelief but now laughed with joy. Abraham and Sarah’s hearts were filled with gratitude and love. They felt blessed beyond measure to have Isaac, their miracle child, who would continue Hashem’s promise.
Abraham and Sarah raised Isaac with love, teaching him about Hashem’s kindness and the importance of faith. They told him about their journey, the promises Hashem had made, and the importance of kindness and respect. Isaac grew up knowing that he was part of a special plan that would continue for generations.
Through their journey, Abraham and Sarah became known for their kindness, their generosity, and their unwavering faith in Hashem. They welcomed anyone who passed by, offering food, shelter, and teachings about the one true God. Their home became a place where people from near and far came to learn about Hashem.
The story of Abraham and Sarah reminds us that faith means trusting Hashem, even when the path ahead is unknown. Their journey teaches us that kindness, generosity, and patience are powerful, and that Hashem’s promises are always fulfilled, even when they seem impossible. Through their lives, Abraham and Sarah showed the world that we each have a purpose and that Hashem is always there to guide and protect us.
